T. Scott Saponas Research Statement

چکیده

As our interactions with computing continue to expand off the desktop, we want to use mobile devices in many, if not all, of our everyday activities. However, the touch screen and physical button centric interfaces of today’s mobile devices offer relatively poor support for interaction in many situations where computing is not our primary task. For example, when wearing gloves in the cold, a mobile phone’s touch screen can be difficult or impossible to use. Similarly, when someone is jogging and listening to music on their portable music player, their arms are typically swinging freely and their eyes are focused on their jogging path, making it awkward to reach for the controls to skip songs or change the volume. My research interests are in creating novel human-computer interfaces to expand the situations and opportunities for computing.

Mobile Support for Face-to-Face Social Interaction

INTRODUCTION Mobile devices allow people to connect with the rest of the world from anywhere. People can now be reached regardless of where they are. If a child gets injured at a school, for example, their teacher can connect with a parent immediately, even if the parent is not at home or work. People can also access information from anywhere. Before ordering dinner at a new restaurant, a diner...

UbiConn : Providing a Ubiquitous Connectivity Experience CSE 561 Project ( Autumn 2004

Despite the proliferation of mobile devices, mobile connectivity is still lacking. Information access is a powerful tool in wired environments. It is even more important for mobile devices, which have limited storage capacity and are not ideal for primary information storage as they have the potential to be lost or broken. The combination of connectivity and mobility will enable users to access...

iLearn on the iPhone: Real-Time Human Activity Classification on Commodity Mobile Phones

As computing moves beyond the desktop, human activity becomes an essential component of many applications. Activity classification is an active research area and several research systems have been constructed. Most have focused on fragile custom hardware only available in limited quantities. We instead seek to use commodity hardware to lower the barrier to creating activity-informed mobile appl...

Emerging Input Technologies for Always-Available Mobile Interaction

Miniaturizing our computers so we can carry them in our pockets has drastically changed the way we use technology. However, mobile computing is often peripheral to the act of operating in the real world, and the form factor of today’s mobile devices limits their seamless integration into real-world tasks. Interacting with a mobile phone, for example, demands both visual and manual focus. We des...

Digital Simplicity: Usable Personal Ubicomp

There are many indicators to suggest that Americans feel technology is complicating their lives. These range from the growing strength of the voluntary simplicity movement [Elgin 1998] and the slew of popular books on “unplugging” [Brende 2004] to research showing that many consumers are overwhelmed by the increasing complexity of daily living [Breen-Pierce & Robin 2000]. In response, many indi...
